We remain passionate about our mission and are hoping that our public presence on the web promotes greater literacy awareness. We believe that by providing a personal book and a companion in a stuffed animal, that a child will enjoy reading and learn to love books and reading.
From the book, Promoting Reading for Pleasure in the Primary School, “Children who say that they enjoy reading and who read for pleasure in their own time do better at school. Reading for enjoyment is positively associated with reading attainment and with writing ability. Pupils who read for pleasure also demonstrate a wider general knowledge, a better understanding of other cultures, and more complex insights regarding human nature, motivations, and decision-making.”
The Toledo Public Library shared eight ideas to encourage a child to read. Jozlyn H shares these:
- Keep books visible and available.
- Write notes to them.
- Keep it fresh.
- Pro-Tip: Order a bundle of 20 children’s picture books every month!
- Get comfy and creative. Ask your children to read to their favorite stuffed animals. Bonus points if their favorite animal is a stuffed hedgehog and the story is about a hedgehog (or other matching animal friends, of course)!
- Encourage looking at pictures.
- Be a role model.
- Show them books are more than stories.
